All Change - Again!
Unfortunately, the Carnoustie Online webmaster (me) has had another of those life changing illnesses that afflict some people more than others.
I've had to look hard to make some decisions on the future of my websites including Carnoustie Online and the Rising Free Group.
My current thoughts on this website are, that I would like to pass this on to a like minded person or to someone who is willing to take Carnoustie Online forward under the same 'free and open' concept it currently adheres to.
Anyway, here are the details if anyone would like to talk to me about it
Carnoustie Online takes and makes absolutely no money whatsoever. It is a project, a labour of love or maybe just a folly. It get's no support from the local community and has been, all but, tarred and feathered by the local 'organisations' who appear to object to it's free and non-mercenary nature.
No-one currently provides the level of online services to Carnoustie as we do here. A few have tried and a few are currently trying to produce commercial profit making websites but I think that most are doomed to failure or in dahger of separating the community into cliques that divide on the basis of finance or social status.
Carnoustie Online is free and open to everyone within Carnoustie without regard to to any race, creed or status. One of it's main aims is to unite and share
resources across the community.
The total cost of running Carnoustie Online is:
Domain carnoustie-online.com - £5.00/year
Domain carnoustie-online.co.uk - £3.75/year
Domain carnoustie-online.net - £5.00/year
Website Hosting (Rising Free)
- £25.00/year
That's it, under £40/year and could be recovered with a single advert placement if required. There are no other expenses at all, I do all of the research and work myself and, whilst I do have some coding and design skills, I am self taught and there is no reason why anyone could not do the same.
The website is managed and constructed within Dreamweaver using Xhtml, php, Mysql and javascript. That's about all, I don't need to use much else. There may be some Flash and I use Paint Shop Pro (9) and Photoshop for creating and editing images.
Our business, links and classified directories are all free for anyone to use but strictly policed to ensure the validity of content for Carnoustie and it's visitors. Most of this is heavily linked with the Rising Free Directory but can easily use it's own copy of those databases in order to stand alone.
Our articles section has been put together as a way of consolidating information from right across the net into one place
where it can be verified and put together as a definitive historical resource.
Newsfeeds are simple Xml
feeds from various sources.
Games and puzzles are collected or created with existing scripts.
That's it really, if anyone would be interested in continuing what I started then please contact me via email and we can talk. There is no money involved I will just need to make sure that Carnoustie Online will not be corrupted by anyone taking over.

Dog Muck Again!
This concerns the old Pitskelly dump, now a part of the Millenium Forest.
I've noticed this problem growing over the past year or so and it does look as if some people, at least, are removing their dog's muck from the streets using a variety of plastic bags.
Just one problem, when they get to the old dump, which is a popular dog walking and childrens play area, they dump the shit, bag and all, under the nearest bush.
This is really noticeable now and disgusting. These bags of shit are there for the duration now as well. It would be much better to empty the bags there than to dump the entire bag which will never degrade. Or better still train the dogs to shit somewhere else on the dump where it will degrade naturally - and I don't mean on the paths!
It appears that most of the dog walkers are keen to be seen lifting muck in the streets but when they get to this area they are prepared to negate all of that by creating a situation that is going to get worse and worse over time.
I blame the Council a little for this because I believe that if any sort of bin was in place it would be used. However, there are none, anywhere around here any more.
So, I'm appealing to the council to re-instate dog shit bins at all of the entrances to the Millenium forest. Two at the East end and two at the West end is enough. Perhaps at the same time they could replace the ones that used to exist in Pitskelly park also.
I am also appealing to the dog walkers who are doing this to stop doing it. Take it home or empty it on the dump and take the bag away. This area is really beginning to look quite good now that a lot of the trees have become established. Don't ruin it please!

The Auld Nick
I was very pleased to see that the application for the Auld Nick to be knocked down and turned into flats was rejected and that the building is to be re-opened soon as a cafe/creche type business.
Far too much of this towns heritage has been lost already to developers and land owners who want to make a fast buck in this way.
I noticed in passing that the Links Hotel has gone now too. Shame!
I'd say, 'what next' but really there is not a lot left. ![]()

Have to say, I like this! New Bus Bay at Chonchies
It's good to know that 'no' is not always the last word. That corner is much easier to negotiate now, especially coming from Monifieth and the way these changes appear to be on-going is a good sign.
A big up for Eddie Willmott and the G&G
